Hey glorious bitches! Quick (or probably not so quick) question! My current job pays me $16.50 an hour, and I have medical, dental, and vision, which combined take only $30 out of my paycheck. Is it better to stay here, or go somewhere that's higher paying but either doesn't have all of the insurances or takes more?

(OR should I stay at the first job and look for a 2nd higher paying job w a 401k?)

Hi precious puggle! This is an interesting question. Because essentially, you're looking at that $30 taken out of your paycheck as an expense, when really it's part of your compensation.

The total monetary value of that insurance is FAR more than $30 if you were to buy the insurance on your own. You're getting a discount through your employer.

That said, personal finance is personal! Maybe money is extremely tight for you right now. Maybe you're willing to risk going without health insurance for a while if it means you can use that $30 to pay off debt or build up your emergency fund. That's your right! I'd suggest first asking if you can opt out of dental and vision, but keep health insurance, if this is your situation.

All that said: you should ALWAYS be keeping one eye open for your next higher paying job. Look for one that pays more and has better insurance policies. I think brushing up on compensation benefits will help you in this equation:

I work four 10 hour shifts a week, but this next schedule has me working 2 five 10 hour shifts in a row. (I don’t know the best way to put all those numbers in a row in a sentence).

I hate sales. It’s not a surprise, I went back to school to try to avoid working retail and the game industry is shitting itself so here I am once again in retail. But the fucking worst part is how much worse I’m getting paid.

When I sold mattresses last time I was making incredible money because the company I worked for was employee owned. I got bonuses, I never made base pay, I always sold enough to get commission. Then a mega corporation bought it and fucked everyone over.

So no more bonuses, lower commission, less benefits. All the evils of capitalism and no union.

I’ve been forced into trainings over and over being like, “If you do a good job and add on accessories and bases you’ll get paid so much more!”

But guess what? I’m great at my job. I fit people for the right pillow and sell protectors because I believe those things are important. I haven’t made commission in months. Deliveries are spaced out, I’m stuck too often in the little store. My sales numbers look incredible, I’m in every way a model employee. Except that I’m getting paid shit to be a model employee and it makes me furious.

My boss is being annoying he had me go to his neighborhood pool house and do cable management on some shitt but i hate cable management cuz im not very good at it and its never is perfect or even very satisfying unless you have complete control over every cable and can unplug or replace them and i could not anyways hes about to get here and #reviewmywork and then we are going to his house to work on his shit and honestly im BORED and this is more work than i wanted to do today and i have 4 huge things i need to be working on at home. I've worked like, over 2 weeks straight sometimes and clocked more than 50 hours a week but I'm on SALARY so it doesn't even fucking matter, and then the SECOND I make less than 40 hours because I was at work for 16 hours straight and my coworker sends me home I get in trouble for "not doing the work I was promised" despite being the reason that shit was even finished on time AND I was hired under the "get your job done and we don't care what your hours are" promise.
